THE ADVENTURE

I apologise in advance if this comes out as a kind
of film studies essay. My grammar isn't the best, and as it's
3:14am in the morning here in good ol' Wales, UK, my typing is
bound to suffer (incase ur wondering why the hell i'm up, i suffer
from 'Night Terrors', and can find no way to beat them apoart
form simply not sleeping. Google it if you're wondering what they
are. its not nice).Anyways, onto the main event:
I felt this video was being scrutinised due to lack
of understanding, so I thought that I would review/analyse it
for you guys and let you know what i think and hope you get some
kind of sense from it through this. I hope you read it all, this
took quite a bit of time on my behalf.
This video could be very confusing. But generally
it has roughly 3 narratives/stories (maybe even 2). These are:
1 - The band all travelling to meet eachother
2 - The woman and man who eventually make love
3 - The woman dressed in white, and the single woman in black.
Once we've got these seperated, the video is pretty
easy to understand and see that it does infact make sense, and
there are similarities drawn through all of them. Unfortunatly
for the masses, its not a music video, but something very much
akin to George Lucas' 'THX 1138', this being a collection of moving
images representative of what the person who made this felt. Or
in this case, (presuming Tom made this video, which i think by
the way, yes he did) how Tom felt this song 'The Adventure' appeared
in his head, and how the music made him feel.
There are some very important scenes in the video
in reguards to what AVA/Tom Delonge is trying to tell us. I'll
explain these scenes as otherwise we'll be here all night.
The video is presented in black and white, which is meant to give
it a timeless feel, and maybe even a 'colour blind' metaphor suggesting
that we can't see things for what they really are right now in
the world.
Tom seems to be racing to the rest of the band in this video,
and this to me, is suggesting how he felt when he had the idea
for AVA. How his heart was racing at 200 miles an hour whilst
on tour in europe, and he felt he had the power to do something
great. He is indeed racing to do that very thing.
A futuristic theme carries through out the video,
but a kind of 60's/70's/80's idea of what the future looked like.
This is simply Tom's 'retro'.
It's main theme is unison.
The band meeting up at the end, and they'd been travelling to
get there. The 'adventure' of their lives if u will. They feel
everythign was leading up to this point. To meeting eachother.
And the girls adventure being that she was awoken with a kiss,
i.e: life injected into her, and the first thing she wanted to
do was make love. The ultimate act of unison.
However, in the video, the woman in the black walks away from
the woman in the white, away from the unison. Which i think is
toms way of telling visually about his friends wife/g.f. leaving
him.Maybe even his way of telling us metaphorically of what happened
to blink (someone broke away because they felt differently). The
fact that everyone else is in white, and she's in black...everyone
else is pure, she is not. Did she cheat on him, leave him for
another guy?I dont know, but it's something negative she did.
At the end, the lights flash by, showing a progression, the song
is over, but the adventure continues.
The band is one at the end, can breathe, and live,
because they have eachother, and will do this together. By 'this',
i mean give the world the tools to make the most of their lives
and therefore make the world a better place. Instead of living
in a world with 'fortitude' and 'anger', as is emphasised by the
neon light displays in this video.
The scene where the man in the lab coat dissolves
among the woman in white. The pure, beautiful woman all focus
on this one man. An image of a robot comes up quickly, and we're
presented with the man dissolving away. i think AVA is toms way
of asking us to awaken from being mindless robots led by people
who appear and disapear, or people who don't stick by us.
He's asking us to take life into our own hands and be ourselves
and try and take on the world. cos thats the only way its gunna
change and become a better place and make the 'woman in black'
leave, so that only pure people (woman in white) are left. Purity
and beauty is what Tom sees the world is, and what he feel sthat
AVA's music helps us know we can achieve. a flawless, positive,
and beautiful world.
Another theme is the title of the song: 'The Adventure'.
Where someone's coming from in life, and where they are going.
It's a huge metaphor for basically saying that life is one big
adventure, and in positive music, we should find a kind of hope
that this adventure is incredible, and beautiful. It's what we
were put here for, so let's make the most of our lives and the
big adventure. The band are travelling to meet eachother, we only
see this chapter in their big adventure. We have an adventure
before this, and an adventure afterwards but taking into context
that adventure is life. Then:
'hello, here I am, here we go, life's waiting to begin...'
Simply put: this is the beginning of our & the band members
adventure with AVA.
'It's too bad she won't live, but then again, who does?'
Tom Delonge, this is a bold statement to make. But
nonetheless, one from the heart and one with meaning. Who does
live? We're all led by governments, and negative emotions such
as anger and greed that we're pretty much blinded to the world
and ourselves. Blind to what it and we have become. This is a
request for us to wake up, injected with a burst of life, and
every positive emotion and do something about it. A reqeust that
we realise we'll always have hope. A request for us to make the
world a better place together. A request for unison. The start
of a great adventure together.
Ok, that's pretty much me all out. well, not completely,
but all out for somethign i think people will actually make an
attempt to read, and maybe even read it all.
It's 4:11am, and i need to get food. Pizza? tea? Tis what i'm
talking about!*stomach rumbles*.
Before going though:
Tom Delonge, this video is a great success. You've
managed to yet again pull yourself up many a notch, and give us
somethign incredibly thought about and emotional. I thank you.
And although i don't feel you need it, good luck. A man who tries
to change the world knows nothing. A man who knows he can give
people the tools to do something about it themselves is a great
man.
Goodnight all. I hope you get some good info out
of this. Re-watch the video afterwards. You'll 'get it' easily.
Nos dda (welsh for 'good night')
