Even those who don't like Blink-182 will get a kick out of this, the
obligatory side project from guitarist-vocalist Tom DeLonge and drummer
Travis Barker. Forsaking cheap poop gags and maddening pop melodies
in favor of a more rudimentary approach, Box Car Racer blasts through
taut mall-punk anthems like "I Feel So" and "Cat Like
Thief," the latter featuring a ripping cameo by Rancid's Tim Armstrong.
Weightier subjects, like on the mainly acoustic "Letters to God"
and "Maybe I Don't," show the boys are growing up. But don't
worry too much, Blink fans, they still know how to have a good time--the
other Blink singer, Mark Hoppus, drops by to guest on "Elevator,"
and the short and punchy "My First Punk Song" sounds exactly
as it should.
